What is Ginseng

Ginseng has occupied the central position of Chinese herbal medicines for thousands of years. It is known as the "King of Herbs" and is included in almost every herbal preparation utilized in Oriental medicines. References to ginseng can be found in writings dating back over two millennia. There are mentions of ginseng consumption during the Qin and Han dynasties, 221 BC - 220 AD. Its Latin name ¡®Panax¡¯ comes from the Greek word ¡®Panakos¡¯, meaning "cure-all."Often coveted by the Asian royalty and military aristocracy, ginseng had been a rare and treasured herb with a medicinal association stretching far back into the ancient traditions of long past ages. Ginseng is known to be a potent source of vitality and longevity; sharps the mind and memory, and restores the body's natural balance of elemental energy. If taken regularly, it increases vitality, and can extend life span. Its original Chinese name ¡®Renshen¡¯ means Man Root, because its shape strongly resembles the form of a human body. Standing, running, sitting, leaping, and many more poses are all frequently found. As a perennial plant, ginseng is often found in heavily wooded areas and requires rich soil to thrive. It takes ginseng several years to mature. Most ginseng roots grow 3-10 years; if longer, the plant would possibly begin to degenerate, and the root may become pitted and wooden. The plant itself is very attractive, with well-shaped green leaves and bright red berry. In mid summer, bright seeds are collected for future gardening. However, it is the root that has restorative value and is harvested in the fall. Once harvested, the root is carefully washed, dried, and processed for medical utilization .
